An advert for a new Colgate toothpaste is promising 10x whiter teeth compared to using other toothpastes – and we want to dispel this myth.
Whitening toothpastes don’t actually whiten your teeth. It is illegal in the United Kingdom to sell products containing more than 0.1% Hydrogen Peroxide over the counter. Hydrogen peroxide is the active ingredient that is licensed for use to whiten teeth, and any concentration more than 0.1% is a Prescription Only Medicine as set out in The Human Medicines Regulations 2012. This means they can only be prescribed by a dentist registered with the General Dental Council.
Studies have shown that a minimum of 0.15% Hydrogen Peroxide is needed to whiten teeth… So what do “Whitening Toothpastes” actually do?
They usually “whiten” your teeth by keeping superficial stains at bay, like the old smokers toothpaste for those who remember it. If you look very closely at the small prints in the ads, they have to confess to this but clever advertising isn’t about being transparent!
The problem with this is that they are often highly abrasive, and these products shouldn’t be used a on a daily basis because they can slowly wear away at the enamel, the outer protective coating of your teeth.
At Sutton Dental, our dentists use products from Boutique Whitening to safely and effectively whiten your teeth. You can find out more about Boutique by clicking here.
